The Goethe-Institut Australien German School Film Festival - make a short movie in German. This annual event, eagerly awaited by enthusiastic students and teachers involves three major prizes awarded in three different categories. The topic for this year is ‘Mauern-Grenzen-Horizonte’, and entries close 15 August. For further information and entry forms visit German School Film Festival. This is an excellent authentic learning experience to promote German in your school. Teaching resources are available also on the website. Film Festival Date: Wednesday 14 th October.

1949 – 1989 – 2009 - What events of historic significance! What changes – not only in Germany but all over the world! Such events remind us of how change is built upon what has gone before. Teachers prepare students for life-long learning in a world in constant flux. The present is challenging, the future is unknown, and the possibilities are endless.

How are teachers adapting their classrooms to the 21st century? What needs to be changed to produce demonstrable improvement in learning outcomes? Which topics and tasks feed students’ imagination? What changes do teachers introduce in order to create a sustainable future for German in their schools?

Call for papers
We invite all educators to submit papers for consideration that relate to their research, experiences and strategies to promote the learning and teaching of German. Please consider offering a session, or sharing a presentation with another teacher, or encouraging a colleague to contribute to the state conference.

AFS Intercultural Programs Australia is an international, voluntary, non-profit organisation that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

They are pleased to announce a 2 month German-Australian high school exchange program.

Australian high school students have the chance to live and study in Germany for 2 months in 2009 for just $5,500, and their German host brother or sister will in turn spend 2 months with them in Australia in mid-2010. For more details, download this FLYER.

The most exciting aspect of this program is that AFS are offering an opportunity for German Teachers to go FREE on exchange (all food, accommodation, flights, medical insurance etc) with a group booking of 5 students. They do not have to teach whilst on exchange and have no responsibility of looking after the exchange students. Addtionally, if the Christmas period is not suitable due to schooling commitments we have flexible date options for the teachers to fit in with school holidays.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED FROM 2 AUGUST TO 6 SEPTEMBER.
Primary teachers interested in attending the Primary Conference on May 26th who reside 100km+ from the Hemisphere Centre in Moorabbin will be eligible for a travel subsidy from the AGTV. Goethe-Institut: 'The German teacher as a producer' workshop for teachers 25 July, 1.30-5pm - the age of I-Pod and YouTube has caused profound changes in our communication patterns- not only among young people. Everybody is their own star and producer. Everbody dreams of a musical breakthrough on YouTube.

Can we afford to ignore this motivation for learning German? This hands-on event is organized like a role play. Through active participation, the German teachers will receive concrete, realizable examples of how to become a producer of songs in German and thereby to motivate their students to use the German language in a more liberated, creative and authentic way.

Additionally, the rappers Roger Rekless & Nico Suave have put together a song for their upcoming tour. Listen to ‚Hallo Australien‘ - a musical teaser and great material to prepare students for the concerts!

Teacher sought for ITF exchange - the German teacher teaches in Kahla near the old castle Leuchtenburg, in a small school of 290 students and 35 staff. She has an apartment with 2 bedrooms. Deutsche Schule Melbourne 2009 Speaker Series - the DSM is excited to be able to present Dr Ingrid Piller, Dr Paul Molyneux, and Prof. John Hajek in their 2009 speaker series. The series of 3 presentations is open to everyone and will provide information on topics surrounding bilingualism in the primary years of school education. Each of the speakers will present their topic and there will be time for questions and answers at the end of their presentation.

AGTV 30th Anniversary - Survey of Members - The AGTV has been in existence as a stand alone single language association since 1979, making this year our 30th Anniversary. The Melbourne Writers Festival is very excited to present German authors Bernhard Schlink and Antje Rávic Strubel. Bernhard Schlink is a German jurist and writer. His writing career began with several detective novels — of these his book, Die gordische Schleife, won the Glauser Prize in 1989. Schlink is perhaps best known for his bestselling book and the 2008 Oscar nominated film adaptation of his work, The Reader (Der Vorleser). A bestseller in both Germany and the United States, Bernhard’s novel has been translated into 39 languages and has won several major literary prizes.

The award winning author Antje Rávic Strubel was a teenager living in East Germany when the Berlin wall came down 20 years ago. During the free event And the walls came tumbling down she discusses the impact of the wall on German literature. As a result of collaboration with the Progress Film Company in Berlin, ACMI will be showing big East German productions to commemorate the historic events of November 1989.
